WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump launched TrumpRx.gov Thursday evening, calling it "one of the most transformative health care initiatives of all time" as his administration takes aim at soaring prescription medication costs.
The government website does not sell drugs directly but serves as a portal directing patients to pharmaceutical companies offering steep discounts on brand-name medications for cash-paying customers. At launch, 43 medications from five major drugmakers—AstraZeneca, Eli Lilly, EMD Serono, Novo Nordisk, and Pfizer—are available at what the White House claims are "most-favored-nation" prices matching the lowest international rates.
Popular drugs including Ozempic, Wegovy, and other blockbuster medications are featured, with users printing gold-embossed coupons to redeem at local pharmacies. The administration secured agreements with 16 pharmaceutical companies, promising tariff exemptions in exchange for dramatic price reductions through Medicaid and direct consumer channels.
"You're going to save a fortune," Trump declared at the unveiling ceremony, though experts note patients with comprehensive insurance coverage may see limited benefits from the cash-pay model. Additional medications from 11 more companies will be added in coming months.
