Microsoft has appointed Indian-origin executive Asha Sharma as the new CEO of Microsoft Gaming, marking a historic leadership shift at one of the world's most powerful gaming divisions. She succeeds Phil Spencer, a gaming industry icon who is retiring after a landmark 38-year career at Microsoft.
CEO Satya Nadella announced the change internally, praising Sharma's vision for consumers and gaming. Sharma, who previously led AI product development at Microsoft and held senior roles at Instacart and Meta, pledged to "recommit to core Xbox fans" while making gaming accessible across PC, mobile, and cloud platforms — with a unified experience built on the principle of "build once, reach players everywhere."
The transition arrives at a turbulent moment: Microsoft Gaming reported a 9.5% revenue drop in the last quarter, battered by tariffs, rising competition, and weakening consumer spending. Alongside Sharma's appointment, Matt Booty steps up as Chief Content Officer, overseeing nearly 40 studios behind franchises including Halo, Call of Duty, and Candy Crush.
Spencer will remain in an advisory capacity through summer 2026 to ensure a seamless handover.
